Day 62: 7/21/19: Harrisonville to Green Ridge, MO

A thunderstorm struck early this morning.  It continued until about 7:30 a.m., and then I broke camp.  Due to my late start, and my need to dry out my tent, today was a short day for mileage.  Before I left, Scott made me a coffee and chocolate smoothie.

I studied all my route options for getting home, and decided taking the Rock Island Spur Trail to the Katy Trail, and the taking it to near St. Louis would be my best route.  They are both rails to trails pathways.

I took Missouri Highway 2 from Harrisonville to Chilhowee, where I got on the Rock Island Spur Trail.

Shortly after I got on the trail, I came across Mike and Joe (pic below) who are from near NYC and are biking from New York to Santa Monica, CA.  This is their first tour, and they have been on the road over 3 weeks.  They are staying in hotels along the way.

In Windsor, I connected with the Katy Trail. I rode a little over 8 miles to get to Green Ridge.  During that short distance I passed the high point on the trail at 955 feet, so it's all downhill from here.

I got my tent somewhat dried out and set up just in time for another thunderstorm to roll through at about 7:30 p.m. and completely soak it again.

Round 2 of thunderstorms came at about midnight.

Total miles today: 65.0

  1. I’ve ridden the Katy Trail east to west and it is FLAT. Be careful though, some of the Trail was destroyed with the recent floods.

  2. Thanks Mark. I've run across some damaged parts, and some parts that are closed. The area is still trying to recover.
