Day 49: 7/8/19: Colstrip to Broadus, MT

Picture of early sunrise this morning.

The morning started with another convenience store breakfast, gravy biscuit and sausage biscuit.

Below is a view of Custer's campsite on June 23, 1876, a couple of days before the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

I went through a portion of the Northern Cheyenne reservation, including the town of Lame Deer.  I had been warned by a couple of people that I did not want to get stuck around there.  Even today, a guy in his truck slowed down and asked me if I wanted him to shuttle me and my bike through Lame Deer.  He said it is a "sketchy" area.  I had planned it so I would be riding through there during the morning, and I rode through without incident.

There was about a 7 mile uphill out of Lame Deer, but that made for a sweet downhill into Ashland.

I had 2nd breakfast at Maggie's Cafe in Ashland, my typical eggs, sausage, and pancakes.

For some reason, I was expecting Montana to be flat after Ashland.  After a few hours of ups and downs, I made it 44 miles to Broadus.  I went by the sheriff's office in Broadus and asked about camping opportunities in town. I was told I could camp at the Cottonwood Park in town. It is very convenient to the grocery store and the bowling alley, where I ate supper (pic below and some pics around town).

For dessert, I bought this at the grocery store and ate the whole thing.  Good ole made in Montana ice cream.

There's a chance of severe storms tonight, so I set up my tent under this little pavilion for a little more protection.

Total miles today: 93.9

  1. You are the master of finding pancakes, bars which serve good food, kind people, and sympathetic law enforcement. I truly believe you can smell a pancake from 30 miles away.
