Day 46: 7/5/19: Stanford to Grass Range, MT

I started the day at the local bar/cafe/casino in Stanford for breakfast.  The folks were very friendly and my breakfast was delicious.  One guy at the cafe thought I had a Texas twang in my accent. When I lived in New Mexico, folks there also thought I was from Texas.  Interesting.

Below are some pics from Central Avenue in the small town of Moccasin.  As you can see in the pics, it is pretty much a ghost town.

Below is a pic of an interesting piece of roadside decoration near Hobson.  When I was a kid, my friend Jon and I use to get in a barn loft, stack 2-3 square bales of hay  for each of us, put a saddle on top of each stack, and then get on the saddles and try to lasso each other's saddle horn and pull each other over.  So I totally get the hay person in the pic riding this hay roll, but I don't understand why he is in the back of a pickup.

Below are some pics of Lewistown.  I learned today that Lewistown is geographically in the center of Montana.

Today, I was eating lunch at Subway in Lewistown when I look outside the window and notice a female kneeling down in front of my bicycle.  Then I noticed she was taking a picture of Lucky Duck (pic below).  I guess I know who the cuter of the two of us is.

Judith Mountains are to the east of Lewistown, and below are some pics of the mountains.

Some more beautiful Montana scenery from today.

While I was in Lewistown, I called the Little Montana Truck Stop and Campground in Grass Range to ask about tent camping there.  They confirmed they have tent campsites.  I made it to Grass Range and went to the campground, but was told they have no camp sites available.  The young man then went and asked a councilwoman of the town if I could camp in the town park. She told him I could do that, so I got on my bike and headed for the park.

As I was riding to the park, a truck pulled up beside me and asked if I had a place to stay.  I told him I was headed to the park to camp, and he said I could stay at his place.  I stayed at Eric and Raylene's (pic below) house last night, and they even fed me supper. What a treat.  They passed me in their car earlier in the Judith Mountains while I was stopped taking a picture.  It was great spending time with them.

  1. People are so nice. You must have a friendly face. I have always thought people are basicly good.

    1. I really enjoy the people. I agree most people are good. I have found bike trips restore my hope in humanity.

  2. I couldn't even put in your mileage day after day, let alone have time to keep up a blog. You are my hero!

  3. Thanks Dean, but I know you could do it

  4. Dean is right. We couldn't do it. You are too humble, Anthony! You are doing fabulous for a 68 year old man. (Bless that fellow for re-calculating and determining your true age!)

As I tell my students, Anthony is the world's strongest man. Thank goodness he has Lisa and people like Eric and Raylene to look after him, though. Lisa probably has to call Anthony at dusk and tell him, "Get off the bike and sleep for a few hours" or he would ride through the night.
