Pic below of morning sky near Edgemont.
After Edgemont, I went through the shell towns of Provo, Rumford, and Ardmore before making it into Nebraska. These 3 towns are pretty much ghost towns. There are a lot of vacant buildings, mobile homes, RVs, and junk vehicles. The road I was on turned to gravel for about 10 miles, and was very dusty when cars would pass.
A few miles after entering Nebraska, I rode through the Oglala National Grassland (pics below).
The first town with services that I came to after leaving Edgemont was Crawford, NE, which was 58 miles away. I ate a potato loaded with brisket, cheese and sour cream for lunch in Crawford. The town is set in a beautiful setting, surrounded by several buttes. I had to climb for several miles to get out of the canyon in which Crawford sits when I left town. Below are some pics of the terrain near Crawford.
After climbing out of the canyon, the terrain became like what's pictured below and remained that way the rest of the ride today.
The next town I came to was Hemingford, which was about 38 miles from Crawford. I considered camping there for the night, but decided to continue on to Alliance, another 19 miles, which was my plan from the start of the day.
As I rode in to Alliance there were thunderstorms close to the town. I found a campground, and got my tent set up just before the rain and hail set in. It stormed for about 20 minutes and then calmed down.
Total miles today: 116.5

ReplyDeleteYeah Tim, that's funny. I make pretty regular overnight trips from Chattanooga to Huntsville. Maybe we can work out a way to do that together.
DeleteI need to know which bike saddle you are using! By now, my bum would be finished!
