Day 22: 6/11/19: Page to Glenfield, ND

I slept a little later this morning because the Page Cafe, where I am having breakfast, does not open until 7 a.m.  As I was laying in my tent, I noticed a couple of specks of sunlight through my rainfly.  There were 2 tiny holes near the Marmot "M" on the side of the rainfly.  I pulled out the duct tape and put a small piece on the outside and inside of the rainfly to cover the holes.  Hopefully, this will keep any moisture out.  Pic of repair below.

I was able to get a little North Dakota gravel travel in today.  I was on a gravel road for about 8 miles and only 2 vehicles passed me. I could have stayed on a blacktop road, but it had a fair amount of semi's on it going 65 mph. All I could muster on the blacktop was about 8 mph, so I figured I could maintain that speed on gravel and not have to deal with the traffic.  Gravel road pics below.

You can see from my tire track on the pic below I'm not the straightest rider on gravel.

On the right side of the road was a blue sky and marshmallow clouds, but...

On the left had side of the road, trouble was brewing.

I was fortunate to stay out of rain today.

Just outside of Cooperstown, ND, I stopped and visited the remnants of the November-33: "Ace in the Hole" launch facility.  I saw the topside of the launch facility and it's blast door which once protected a missile (pic below). From 1966-1997, a nuclear-tipped Minuteman missile stood in this underground silo waiting to be launched.

Pic below is the Griggs County Courthouse in Cooperstown.

The word of today is wind. The wind was out of the north at 14 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. I was headed primarily north and west today, so that means the wind was either in my face or at my side.  Either way, it makes for a hard day.

I pulled into Glenfield, my stop for the night at about 4 p.m.  I decided not to continue riding today because the next town is about 26 miles away, and I was tired of dealing with the wind.  It was a chore at times to keep my speed at 7 mph, and this was on a flat road.

With the wind being out of the north, it has a bit of chill to it. At 6:30 p.m., I was in my tent inside my warm, down sleeping bag.

Total miles today: 63.4

  1. Of course you have duct tape with you! So prepared. Hope that seals the leak.

People in cars don't understand wind. The math involved in pushing yourself through the wind is incredible. At some point, it's just an exercise of frustration. Hang in there and....stay warm.

  2. Thanks Ron. The last couple of days the wind has been my friend, and I really appreciated it.
