Day 12: 6/1/19: Camp Point, IL to Fort Madison, IA

My original route had me crossing the Mississippi River into Iowa at Keokuk. Sandy and Brent told me yesterday that the road into Keokuk was closed due to flooding. So today is going to be a modified route. I now plan on crossing into Iowa at Fort Madison.

I rode about 34 miles to Carthage, IL, for breakfast. I made a side trip in Golden to see the Prairie Mills windmill there (pics below).

I left Carthage enroute to Fort Madison with storm clouds looking in the distance. So here I go again racing against storm clouds. All I got was sprinkled on as I pulled into Fort Madison.

As you see from these pics in Dallas City, IL, folks along the Mississippi River are having a hard time.

The pic below shows the use of sandbags to keep the road open.

Pic below shows the road in Iowa at the base of the bridge that crosses the Mississippi. It was flooded, but was passable.

I made it to Iowa!!!!

Restored Fort Madison appears to be floating in the river (pic below).

Tonight I am staying in a hotel in Fort Madison to clean up and to do laundry.  I'm checking all the rack bolts on the bike, and cleaning and lubing the chain.

Total miles today: 73.6

  1. I'm glad you are able to settle into a hotel. It looks like an incredible journey, and it reminds me how lots of other people are having terrible issues with the flooding and how lucky we are right now. Hope you enjoy a good night's rest!

    1. Thanks Deb. It has been an afternoon of doing laundry, resting, and recalculating my route.

  2. The people who settled town must have been fine Dutch who were eager to harness the WIND.

I hope you feel energized after taking multiple showers and getting the bike tightened, cleaned, and oiled.

  4. I've been thinking about using that bridge, but frankly it looks terrible by bike - two narrow lanes, no shoulders of sidewalk and - what, 2 miles long?
    How was it?
