Day 14: 6/3/19: Hedrick to Waterloo, IA

Had breakfast at the BP station in Hedrick this morning. Yep, I said BP station, bacon egg cheese biscuit at the service station was the only thing going in town for breakfast.  I was just after some calories to propel me a few miles.

A couple of shots from the past at the BP.

A pay phone and free air.  Don't see those often these days.

Snapped a pick of the depot on the way out of Hedrick.

Today was another day of ups and downs. I'm still in the hills of Iowa. For a scenic drive in the state, drive Iowa Highway 21.  To fully experience it, bike the drive. :) Below is a pic of part of the scenery.

I went through the town of Delta.  Main Street pic below.

Then came the town of What Cheer. I guess this town's name could have different meanings depending on what punctuation is used, i.e. "What Cheer!" or " What Cheer?" I hope it's the statement and not the question. Some pics around What Cheer below including the Freedom Rock.

Pic below is the What Cheer Opera House.

I made it to Denny's near I-80 and had 2nd breakfast. Pic below.

As I pulled up to Denny's, a guy named James was standing outside fiddling around a Jaguar SUV that he was renting. The SUV was filled with electronics and there was a bundle of stuff on the roof with a tarp around it. He asked about my trip and we chatted for a while. He is from California on his way to Chicago for a job interview in the electronics industry. He gave me a portable battery charger and a crank generator for my cell phone. Below is his pic with his "stuff."

When I showed Lisa this picture and she saw all his stuff, she commented weird meets weirder.  Im not sure which one I am. She also thinks all the electronic equipment is stolen. What do you think?

I hit 1000 miles for this trip in Belle Plaine, IA. (pic below)

Below are some pics of Belle Plaine.

I spent a lot of time today on Iowa Highway 21. Compared to the other roads I have been on lately, this road had quite a bit of semi truck traffic. It was good to finally be on some bike paths when I got to Waterloo. The city has a nice connection of paths that run through it.  I was supposed to take the path all the way to George Wyth State Park, but recent flooding put a stop to that plan.  (Pics below)

Below are pics of the Cedar River that flows through Waterloo.

Pic below of a nice pedestrian bridge across the Cedar River.

I am camping tonight at George Wyth State Park. The shower itself was worth the $11 camping fee. Pic of campsite below.

Today, I completed the 3rd phase of my tour.

Total miles today: 113.2

  1. Congrats on surviving a long day in the saddle. Hope you are using chamois cream, aka Assos chamois cream or Chamois Butt'R! You non cyclists are going to have to look it up....I'm not explaining. lol

Many immigrants built Opera Houses in the day. It was a way to show they were transitioning from pioneers to civilization. Bring Carmen to Iowa, they said. Sadly, those towns are suffering like most small towns.

Denny's looks wonderful. What am I saying? Pat makes that for me everyday! Which explains why I'm still in the porch swing.

Woot woot. 1000 miles. Hang in there!

  2. No chamois cream for me. Just trying to build up those callouses. Yep, I've been through a lot of really small towns with good people, but the towns are sadly drying up.
