Day 11: 10/9/2022: York to Chester Springs PA

I woke up at 6 a.m. which has been the latest I have slept this trip.  I loaded up and headed out.  I quickly learned that there's something that can divide a city like a river - it's an Interstate.  My route today had me riding on PA 462 out of York.  That road was closed at I-83 due to construction, so I got out google maps to find a way around.  There were no roads crossing the interstate relatively close by.  I had to take about an 8-mile detour just to get on the other side of that interstate.  Like everything, it could always have been worse.

I rode through the towns of Hallam, Columbia and Lancaster before heading into more rural areas.  Some pics around Lancaster below.

Pic of Witmer's Tavern and information about it below.

I was on Pennsylvania Bike Route S most of the day.  Right after leaving Lancaster, the route goes through a lot of beautiful rural area that has large Amish and/or Mennonite farms (pics below).

Next town was New Holland (pics below).

I came across Weaver's Mill covered bridge (1878) pictured below.

In Churchtown, there is the historical church pictured below.  I thought it was interesting that the graves take up almost the entire yard of the church.

A couple more scenery pics from today taken just prior to getting to my final destination for the day.

I noticed that after New Holland the hills were getting a little longer and steeper which began making my ride slower.  However, I had a nice tailwind today to help me along in the flatter terrain.  It was almost dark by the time I arrived.

I'm staying with my 3rd Warm Showers' hosts this trip.  They are Annemarie and Ed (pic below).  Annemarie made us a wonderful vegetarian spaghetti and salad for supper.  For dessert, we had apple crisp that their daughter made with ice cream on top.  Everything was delicious.

Total miles today: 79.3

  1. The Warm Showers is such a great idea, and the homemade food has to way better than your peanut butter crackers.

    Ride on Anthony.

    1. It really was. Not just better food, but quality interaction with genuinely good people.

  2. Peanut butter on crackers is hard to beat. I also leaned heavily on Fig Newtons over the years. But those Warm Showers! I’ve ALWAYS told you, Anthony- those are the way to go. Ditch the tent ⛺️ 🚲😜.

I started sleeping 🛌 in nice people’s houses in 1983. It spoiled me. There wasn’t officially WARM SHOWERS in those days, but the showers were warm and the people were nice.
