Day 8: With another high mileage day staring me in the face, I got up a little after 3 a.m., and was on the road by 4 a.m. It was nice riding before the sun came up. Hello sunrise...
I rode about 38 miles and stopped in Hartville to have breakfast. The restaurant had a very chill vibe to it. Christian music was playing on the radio and I heard songs by Elvis and Dolly Parton. The few folks in the restaurant were very friendly. There was a labeled table that I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole (pic below).
A few miles from Ash Grove, my stopping place for the night, I met Colby (pic below). He is from Portland, OR and is riding from Outer Banks, NC, to Florence, OR. He has never had a driver's license and bikes everywhere, but this is his first bicycle tour.
We made it to Ash Grove, and stayed at the First Baptist Church there with the approval of the mayor. I had texted the mayor last night asking about accommodation options for touring cyclists and he said he could get me into the church to stay the night.

Day 9: Colby and I rode together to Pittsburg, KS. Due to the uncertain camping accommodations there, we decided to share a hotel room and split the cost.
We definitely had a lot less hills today, but rode most of the day with about a 15-20 mph wind out of the southwest and we were headed west. This made it challenging for us.
During our ride we came across numerous cows that had escaped their pasture and were in the middle of the road (pic below). There were no houses in the vicinity so there was no one to report the cows. We eventually were able to get around them and proceed on.

I’m glad to see you made it through all the groups of cattle. We have cattle, and it’s nice to see cattle out on the road and not be receiving the phone calls that say “your cows are out”! Glad you’re having such a good time on your trip. Maybe you’ll get a tail wind day soon .

DeleteAlso, you are correct, and that you should not sit under that sign unless you have a friend with you. At least that way it gives the appearance you were trying to learn something new. That kind of place gives off the vibe that they could really put out a good meal also! ~ Ron
