Day 3: 7/26/24: Sedalia to Tebbetts MO

At about 10 p.m. last night, all got quiet at the fairgrounds.  The announcer on the PA system in the distance quit calling out competitors, so I guess horse competitions must end about 9:30-10:00.  I slept well in my little corner of the fairgrounds.

Since today was supposed to be a shorter ride day, I slept in to about 5:30 a.m.  Below are a few pics along the Katy Trail today.

The Katy Trail is the longest continuous recreational rail trail in the U.S.  It runs 240 miles mostly along the bank of the Missouri River in the right-of-way of the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad.  Below is a pic of one of the few remaining railroad signals left along the trail.

Pic below of Bruce who is from Southern Missouri.  He biked from Windsor to Pilot Grove, camped for the night , and is headed back to Windsor.

Pic below of Josh from Cincinnati.  He is biking from St. Charles, MO to Kansas City.  He plans to take a train back to St. Charles.

Pic below of Tom.  He and his wife biked from Sedalia to Boonville.  They stayed in a hotel for 1 night and were returning to Sedalia when I met them.  His wife didn't want to be in the picture and I did not ask for her name.  Tom retired from a Federal prison at Leavenworth, KS, so we talked a lot about the Federal retirement system for law enforcement officers.  This is Tom's first bike trip, and his wife's second.  They were both on e-bikes.

Pic below of Megan who is biking from Coney Island, NY to Ketchum, Idaho.  She is biking as a fundraiser for the Be Good Foundation.

My original plan for today was to ride to Hartsburg and camp at the city park.  I got there at about 5 p.m., but decided to ride another 25 miles to get to the Turner Shelter on the Katy Trail in Tebbetts, where I could take a shower and sleep inside an air conditioned room. I have stayed at this shelter a few times on past trips.

Pics below of me, Gary & Alice.  They are from Chicago, and she is biking from Kansas City to Alton, IL.  He is driving their RV to support her during the ride.  They stayed in their RV at the Turner Shelter, and I stayed inside the shelter.  No other cyclists showed up so I had the shelter all to myself.

Total miles today: 101.4
